Monster Steelhead landed on Hoh River

Nearly four feet long, weighing more 30 pounds. Caught on a fly. Reports are coming in of this monster steelhead being caught on a fly rod, using 17-pound tippet material, a couple weeks ago. The reports stats are thus: 44 inches in length with a girth of 23-1/2 inches. A biologist on the river, weighed the fish just out of the water and reported it at between 31 and 32 pounds. The accepted size-to-weight formula (Length x Girth-sq. / 800) = weight puts the fish at 30.28 pounds. After the prolonged fight (nearly an hour), the fish was reportedly bleeding heavily, and unlikely to survive, so the angler took it in for official measuring (state-approved scales put it at 30.38 lbs, nearly 24 hours after it was landed).
