Utah wilderness plans gain new advocates
Exploring remote, primitive wild country brings me as close as I’ve ever come to having a religious experience. Naturalists and writers have long described wilderness in religious terms such as cathedral forests, heavenly meadows, and rock temples.
So perhaps its fitting that several religious groups have stepped up and lobbied in favor of new wilderness protections. Christians, Jews, and Mormons have come together in Utah to lobby the the congressional delegation from that state in favor of new wilderness designations for remote parts of wild country.The 10 churches were brought together by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. This group organized a series of “wildland dialogues” for the faith community. As a result, these groups found common ground in the belief that protecting natural areas “as they were designed by God,” was important.
