Sierra Designs Yahi 6: A great backcountry home away from home

As the spring turns to summer, campers increasingly flock out into our forests, river meadows and beaches. To make the most of their outdoor adventures, those campers require good shelter in the basecamp so  they can be well rested for their days of play. That means having a weather-tight, comfortable ‘home-away-from-home.’ Enter Sierra Designs. Their new Yahi 6 tent provides all the room a family needs not only for sleeping, but also for stretching out and relaxing no matter what the weather outside brings. Building on its solid, well-earned reputation as a maker of premium backpacking tents, Sierra Designs utilizes all of that tent design expertise in their car camping models. The Yahi 6 utilizes a strong modified-dome structure, creating a tent perfectly sized for a family of four along with their canine companions. Big enough for everyone to sleep comfortably, but still have some personal space around them. Six can comfortably stretch out to sleep, though they will be snugged closer together. In total, you’ll have 80.5 square feet of interior floor space (95-inches by 120-inches) and almost 30 sq. ft. of vestibule space shared between the two doorways. The Yahi 6 proved sturdy in howling winds over up to 25 mph, and kept its interior bone dry even when soaked in rainstorms that dumped more than an inch of rain during a long weekend near Mount St. Helens. 14 lbs., 13 oz.;  $399. www.sierradesigns.com
