Hi Dan,
As a horsewoman that gave up a much-loved sport due to rheumatoid Arthritis, I agree with you a new name and larger awareness is required to give grease to the wheel! I am with you and admire your strength. Keep writing and enjoying your life.

Ironically, the premise of technical outdoor gear is the long-lasting design benefits of durability and reliability...we pay extra for it instead of buying raincoats at WalMart. Sure there are exciting innovations in textiles and gear design each year, but then doesn't the new kool aid drive consumption? I don't have a solution but want to point out that the outdoor industry wears the same guilt. If we can find a good way to recycle gear (other than giving it away to Goodwill and the Salvation Army), great!

Thanks Dan for the excellent post. RA suffers need to speak out about this terrible autoimmune disease to have it recognised for the crippling deadly disease that it is and to obtain funding for research.I believe one thing that is needed is a new label .... getting rid of "arthritis" and have a name that reflects the serious systemic autoimmune disease that it is. I am now in the advanced stage and have had numerous surgeries to repair the damage that has been done. Thanks again for increasing the awareness of RA!
